#FitnessFriday – Healthy Eating Tips – Porridge

Fitness Friday - 3 December 2020

To get set you up for the day and help you to feel fuller for longer as the cold winter days take hold, there is nothing better than a hearty serving of porridge.

Read more about the benefits of this King of breakfasts, as well as some of our team’s favourite toppings.

As we have all been told, breakfast is the most important meal of the day – but not all breakfasts are created equal!

To really help you feel energised for the day ahead, we would always suggest tucking into a big bowl of porridge. Not only will it stop you from unnecessary mid-morning snacking, but it will also give you all the energy you need to get that festive to-do list completed before lunch.

And to get you in the festive mood, why not give our Christmas porridge recipe a try? Not only is it low-fat, it's packed full of festive flavours such as dried cranberries, orange zest and cinnamon. It’s so good, you'll wish it's Christmas every day.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 and 1/2 cups almond milk
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/8 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/8 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/8 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 2 tbsp coconut flakes
  • 1 tsp of peanut or almond butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1-2 tsp maple syrup

Method

Bring the oats, orange juice and almond milk to a boil and then simmer on a low temperature for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until fully cooked.

Once cooked, remove the oats from the hob and add the coconut oil, peanut or almond butter, cinnamon, coconut, slivered almonds, orange zest, dried cranberries and chopped nuts.

Stir all ingredients into the oats until well blended.

Add maple syrup to taste.

Serve, eat and enjoy every spoonful of that delicious festive flavour!

In fact, no matter your taste, the great thing about porridge is that it can be customised to whatever you like. Some of our favourites are mixed berries with chopped almonds. Or why not add cinnamon, apple and raisins to make a baked apple pudding porridge?
